Making The Most Out Of Busy Photographs

Most of the time I try to wait for a clear shot before I take a photograph…. But sometimes that just never works out. Like for example at Monticello a few weekends ago I found a spot and waited and waited some more… after a few minutes I could see a pattern to the flow of visitors and I decided to shoot a few different shots and hope for the best. I didn’t carry my tripod into the house because only a bag of certain size is allowed… so I did these handheld.  First set of brackets I shot had people on the left side of the fish pond but the front of the house was pretty clear.

I knew I had to get a shot with the pond reflection clear so that’s what I waited for with my second set….

So now I had the whole pond clear of people well… sort of.. I had to use the left half from one and the right half from other. You may be asking the question how did you use these two sets when they are obviously from different angles. I layered them in Photoshop and applied a black mask to one of the layers, taking the white brush I masked a section big enough to see on top of the other layer. Then selecting the move tool I aligned the images based on the location of the house, pond etc.

Dealing with the people in the field and the rail towards the right side of the house took more work using the cloning tool to remake the railings from one just like it on the lest side of the house. 🙂

So remember sometimes you just can’t get a clear shot but doesn’t always mean you can’t get the shot you want!

The Monticello Cellar

This past weekend we visited Moticello in Charlottesville, VA. The leaves are starting to change colors but we’ve still got a ways to go yet. I have a few fall spots I want to visit soon!

I grabbed a few good shots on this trip : ) like this one which I captured in the cellar located beneath Monticello. This one was edited using Photoshop, Topaz Clarity and Topaz Black and White Effects.

Sunset Through The Purple Vetch – Blue Ridge Parkway, VA

I took a trip up on the parkway to capture what turned out to be a beautiful sunset yesterday. The tree’s at the overlooks seems to block lots of the views and make for crappy photo’s. So coming up with a good composition is always a challenge! For this one I decide to lay down and shoot the sun rays through the small flowers on the ground. I used the Sony NEX-5N for this shot and captured 3 bracketed shots handheld, with the 18-55mm kit lens.

I then processed this shot using Photomatix Pro, Photoshop CS6, Lightroom, Topaz Labs Adjust and Clarity. If you haven’t seen my review on Topaz Clarity you should check it out! This is an excellent piece of software to make contrast adjustments in landscape photography.

Shooting Landscapes From Underwater

I’ve been experimenting with some half underwater and above water shots lately, it’s harder than it sounds for sure. Getting the camera set at the right angle and finding a good composition are the two hardest things about it. These experiments have been fun and I’m definitely still learning every time I go out and shoot like this. Here’s a sneak peek of one of the images….

HDR Photography With The Sony NEX-5N

I’ve been trying to work on my eBook Photographing Bodies Of Water  which is going to be “A beginners guide to taking photographs of water” the past few weeks. Mother Nature must have other plans though, every time I plan to shoot it rains or storms… So I bought a waterproof housing for my Sony NEX5N now that won’t be a problem. 🙂 The housing allows me to use the 18-55mm kit lens and gives me full control of all the buttons on the camera other than adjusting the lens. So far the image quality looks great and I have no complaints! This camera I bought mainly for my walk around camera, but with the release of firmware version 1.02 now it has more use. With now being able to shoot a 3 frame bracket with up to 3ev exposure, HDR photography is now a reality. Sign up for my email list if you’d like to receive updates when my eBook is released!
